5 things to remember when writing a blog

In small business writing a blog is sometimes right at the bottom of the priority list, but some of the real reasons to write blogs are simple. Firstly adding a blog a week will show Google that your website is current and is regularly being updated. Google Bots continually crawl the web to find new content and the more content you have the higher you can climb the rankings naturally. Also, they are easy way to inform your customers of offers, products, services and show your expertise too.

1. Use keywords

Keywords are not an exact science so don’t be put off by trawling your thoughts for hours to find perfect keywords. Simply put if you are an electrician, anything that people would search for ie Electricians in Peterborough or Wiring problems, or How to change a fuse would work. These are termed as long tail keywords as they are more than one word. Single keywords can be used too, but be mindful of using the same keyword in every blog as this will not help your cause.

2. Length is key

People often ask what is the optimum length for a blog. They are often put off by the idea of writing as essay or something like a whitepaper. Blogs are simple. Online clients only have a short attention span. The optimum length for a blog is between 300-500 words. If you writing is under 300 words Google will not see it as an SEO piece.

3. Create a CTA

The reason you are writing the blog is to inform. In return, the Call to Action should be the last paragraph of your blog directing the reader on what to do next. This may be as simple as ‘Call us on 01733 123456 for a free quote’ or ‘Check out our website for more products and services’. Just make it pertinent to what you want the user to do and mix it up a little.

4. Identify your topic

A blog that waffles between topics is neither informative or engaging. Pick one topic, plot a beginning, middle and end. If you are stuck, identify a problem, provide a solution, add how your business would tackle it, add a CTA.

5. Be creative

Have fun with it. This is your business, so show your character. This is how people engage with you and see your expertise.
